What is an MT940 file?

MT940 is a SWIFT text format that most European business banks still export — and that automated statement delivery (EBICS, host-to-host, SWIFT FileAct) hands you in the first place. Each transaction lives in a tag-based line (:61:) followed by a narrative (:86:). It is compact but not human-friendly.

A bank portal CSV, by contrast, is shaped differently at every bank — different columns, date format, decimal separator and encoding. That is the real problem MT2CAMT solves: instead of converting whatever structure your bank happens to use, it converts the statement to one consistent layout you can rely on month after month.

MT2CAMT reads value dates, booking dates, amounts, debit/credit direction and — where the bank supplies them — structured counterparty details from the :86: narrative. It checks that the transactions actually reconcile to the closing balance and warns you if anything is off, instead of silently producing wrong output.

MT940 to CSV — common questions

Do I need to create an account?

No. The free tier converts without signup. Accounts are only needed for higher limits and accounting-software export layouts.

Which banks provide MT940 files?

Most European business banks still export MT940, including ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank and Deutsche Bank. See the supported-banks page for the current list.

Why is my file deleted after 10 minutes?

We deliberately do not retain bank statements. Your file is processed in temporary storage and permanently deleted within 10 minutes — you are never a long-term custodian of someone else's financial data, and neither are we.

What does the CSV look like?

Columns are value date, description, amount, direction and counterparty name, UTF-8 with BOM so accented characters survive Excel on Windows. A semicolon-delimited option is available for European locale settings.
