What is a CAMT.053 file?
CAMT.053 is the ISO 20022 XML format European banks are defaulting new business accounts to as MT940 is phased out (expected around 2027–2028). Unlike MT940's text lines, CAMT.053 is structured: balances, booking and value dates, a standardized transaction classification, and properly separated debtor/creditor names.
MT2CAMT reads that structure and keeps it. Counterparty names and account numbers come from the XML's RltdPties block and references from EndToEndId — so the output is often more complete than the CSV export the bank's own web portal offers, which frequently flattens or drops exactly that structure.

CAMT.053 to CSV — common questions
My bank says CAMT.053 — is that the same as ISO 20022?
CAMT.053 is one message type within ISO 20022 (camt.053.001.02 and later point releases). If your bank exports XML statements, this is very likely the format you have.
What if my XML uses a newer CAMT.053 version?
MT2CAMT reads the namespace from the file itself rather than assuming one version, so point releases parse without you having to know which one your bank uses.
Does the CSV keep counterparty details?
Yes — where the bank provides them, the counterparty name and IBAN from the XML are written to the output instead of being lost inside a free-text description.
